Let me know if this is all beginning to sound familiar, but a five-star talent with ties to Prolific Prep, after reclassifying up a grade level, just took to national television to announce his commitment to BYU basketball on ESPN.

Time is a circle in the realm of college hoops, and BYU basketball is experiencing the best Groundhog Day scenario of all time.

The number six recruit in the ESPN class of 2026 rankings, and the number-one recruit in the class of 2027 before reclassifying, Bruce Branch III held back tears on ESPN as he thanked everyone who played a part in helping him reach the place that he now finds himself. Speaking of his family, Branch needed to take a moment, noting the challenges they overcame together on his journey.

Smiling as he regained his composure, Branch stood from his seat and revealed royal blue beneath his jacket, proudly donning "BYU" on the chest of his number 3 jersey.

Branch's commitment makes it the third consecutive season for Kevin Young's program with a five-star freshman recruit, starting with Egor Demin, then AJ Dybantsa, and now adding Bruce Brach III. It appears Branch will also be wearing number three in Provo -- the same as his predecessors -- assuming AJ Dybantsa opts to submit his name into the NBA Draft this summer.

Despite their current on-court struggles, there is no dip in recruiting delivery for BYU basketball. His final decision came down to just two schools, BYU and USC, but Kevin Young's NBA-level program, coaching style, and facilities swayed Branch to Provo.

His coach noted the most attractive aspects of BYU's program during Branch's official visit.

"His visit to BYU was very high-level. They showed him what AJ Dybantsa is doing, and they see him in that role; the size, length, skill set, and versatility to impact in multiple ways. Bruce loved the basketball presentation, how it's an NBA program, from the workouts, practice, nutrition, strength and conditioning to recovery. He got to see them play Arizona and how they operate on game day."

One important detail is the lack of any monetary mention. With the top-level athletes certainly drawing substantial NIL checks across the board, recruiting comes down to one key factor: which program will prepare these young players for advancement to the professional level. In the case of Bruce Branch III, the answer was BYU.
