Conference champs! BYU golf wins the Big 12 match play championship
The Cougars are making waves as new members of the Big 12 Conference, and the BYU golf team is taking home the conference crown for their win in the men's golf match play championship.
Please contain your excitement.
As someone who struggles mightily on the golf course, I have to give it up for the Cougs on this one. Can I make a 3-pointer? Sure. Could I kick a field goal? With enough chances, eventually. But can I hit that evil ball a couple hundred yards and land it softly on the green? Get out of here, no way.
Golf is witchcraft, my friends, and I've explained this ad nauseam to this point, but that should make it all the more impressive for the men's golf squad to come home with a victory--top wizarding school on this side of the pond!
While the football and basketball programs earn the most attention from observers, a conference championship is a big deal for this team out of Provo, Utah. While the rules of match play are a bit complicated, KSL's Brian Preece explained the point system far better than I could ever hope to.
"In match play, an individual match winner receives one point." Preece began, "An individual match that remains tied after 18 holes awards each team a half point. Once all individual matches are completed within a team match, the team with the greater point total will receive three points, while the losing team receives zero points. If the match is tied at the end of all five individual matches, both teams receive one point."
The final point tally closed as follows, with the Cougars dominating their group of Utah, Houston, and West Virginia.
- BYU (26 points)
- Utah (8 points)
- Houston (-7 points)
- West Virginia (-27 points)
Now it's no landscaping dynasty, but every Cougar championship is worth celebrating.
The golf team will continue play at the Leadership & Golf Collegiate in Monterey, CA, from the 21st to the 23rd.
