BYU basketball just saw one of their ideal targets from the transfer portal announce he'll be staying in the college ranks for another season. Great news! After dipping his toe in the proverbial waters of the NBA Draft, Texas Tech product Darrion Williams hopped out of the pool, dried off, and reaffirmed his availability in the NCAA transfer portal.
Here's the bad news, though: Williams' connection to Kevin Young and the BYU Cougars likewise seems to have dried off during re-entry.
According to Jeff Goodman with the Field of 68, Darrion Williams' recruiting room has been whittled down to three suitors: Kansas, NC State, and Ohio State.
Depending on how you view this break, this could be a good indicator for Coach Young's program or a horrific sign that doomsday is impending.
...Ok maybe that last part was a bit dramatic. Here's why his disinterest could be a bad sign for the Cougars: their recruiting power is far from undeniable. After seemingly claiming nearly every major recruit they set their eyes on (Dybantsa, Staton, Wright, etc), the BYU locomotive has seemingly cooled off a touch when it comes to Williams, a player the Cougars pined for when he hit the void of transfer suitors.
But realistically, BYU's name dropping out of the bowl is more likely an indication that the Cougars are content with the squad they've built for the upcoming season. It's truly a squad with Final Four upside, and that's something that no BYU basketball team has been able to say since Jimmer Fredette headlined the depth chart.
This season, BYU basketball is back in a position of power. Missing out on Williams is a shame, because who would say no to more talented and experienced players? But Kevin Young's extreme makeover of the basketball program has been exemplified in the lack of disappointment and coverage regarding this transfer miss.
