ESPN Gameday makes their pick for BYU vs Kansas State
ESPN College Gameday is far from a perfect crew when it comes to projecting the results of a football game. As a crew of well-known experts, these pickers love to make the safe choice more often than not, and this week was no exception.
BYU fans are too familiar with the lack of national awareness of the program, and it was easily apparent as the Gameday crew picked their favorites for this weekend's matchups.
Among those games was BYU's late-night battle against the 13th-ranked Kansas State Wildcats in Provo, and much of the ESPN slate felt that the Cougars were disadvantaged in their first Big 12 Conference clash of the season. Pat McAfee pointed out that viewers were in for excellent quarterback play between BYU QB Jake Retzlaff and KSU QB Avery Johnson, giving Johnson the edge for his cascading locks of hair.
Listening to a panel list their predictions is a funny experience for fans, who watch with anxious anticipation in hopes of confirmation for their internal bias. If their favorite team gets the nod, then the experts earn credibility, but if their team receives a snub, the pickers must be uninformed. A trivial dichotomy for certain, but we'll come back every week to pray for a taste of confirmation.
Aren't sports the best?
Here's how the team predicted tonight's result:
Desmond Howard - K-State
Nick Saban - K-State
Pat McAfee - K-State
Blake Shelton - K-State
Lee Corso - K-State
Kirk Herbstreit - BYU
Of all the experts on this panel, Kirk Herstreit stands alone as the only BYU believer. He pointed to the difficulty of winning a night game in LaVell Edwards Stadium, and trusted BYU's defense to give Avery Johnson his toughest test of the young season.
Cougar fans will hope Herbstreit has seen the future as BYU hopes for an upset victory in their first Big 12 matchup.
