Robert Wright III had his heart in Provo while visiting Mark Pope at Kentucky

He's been a BYU guy from the start.

Robert Wright III gave BYU basketball quite the scare when his early NIL negotiations fell through and his name entered the threshold of the transfer portal.

The only returning starter on this year's team in a sport where continuity is worth its weight in gold, and doubly so when it's a player good enough to have head coach Kevin Young unabashedly declare him the best point guard in the country. Retaining Wright was critical for BYU basketball's success this season, but the mystery surrounding his short time in the transfer portal has loomed over Wright's offseason, shrouding his priorities in a dark cloud of mystery.

He flirted with a transfer to Kentucky -- that happened. But Wright's crystal ball shifted drastically from Lexington to Provo almost overnight following his official visit to Mark Pope's program, and now the question becomes what exactly went down over the offseason.

Wright shed a bit more light on his time in the portal during a recent media availability.

"The whole process was kinda moving fast," Wright shared. "With BYU, we were trying to get something worked out. But the timeline and everything just didn't come together at the right time.

"Coach and them encouraged me to enter the portal, and then I did end up taking a visit to Kentucky. And I was there for a day, and the second day, I just went back to the airport, because I just wanted to be at BYU. That was my mindset the whole time."

As a side note: it looks like Wright wasn't the only Cougar to get a fresh new haircut over the offseason. I see your buzz cut, Collin Chandler.

It sounds like Wright and BYU were on the same page during the whole process -- both sides wanted to come to an agreement. But whether the issue was money or some other unknown variable, Robert Wright III and BYU basketball are a united front once again, and plan to move past an uncertain offseason and move forward into a brighter future.

BYU's staff wanted Wright to do what was best for himself -- that's why he was encouraged to explore his options through the portal. It's exciting to learn that Wright didn't come back to BYU because he had to; he hurried back to Provo because it's where he wants to be. With all the exceptional talent entering the program this season, BYU is thrilled to have Wright returning in royal blue.
