BYU basketball's scouting team -- along with the rest of the nation -- likely felt their ears perk up when Dylan Mingo, a top-three guard in the recruiting class of 2026, broke off from North Carolina and reopened his recruitment. The alarm bells are certainly ringing at KYU HQ now that Kayden Mingo, Dylan's older brother, committed to the Baylor Bears, BYU's Big 12 peer.

Mingo started every game in the Big Ten last season, averaging 13.7 points, 4.3 assists and 2.1 steals per game.

So now the question is no longer "should BYU take a look at Dylan Mingo?", but rather, "is BYU in danger if they don't take a shot at the UNC de-commit?"
The obvious implication of Kayden Mingo's Baylor commitment is that Dylan could be soon to follow. Scott Drew has built a very strong program in Waco, that produced two NBA talents in Tounde Yessoufou and Cameron Carr even on a down year -- that's attractive to likely one-and-done prospects like Mingo. If he opts to play his college season at Baylor, he becomes another obstacle for BYU in the ever-loaded race to the top of the Big 12 Conference.
BYU wasn't involved in Mingo's initial round of recruiting, where he took visits to Washington, Miami, UConn, Alabama, Penn State, and North Carolina, among others. The New Yorker opted to primarily explore options in the Eastern United States as well as... well, well, well, would you look at that?
Mingo took a trip to Baylor as well.
So, here we stand again, turning our gaze to Kevin Young and asking, "do we really want to deal with that two or three times this season?"
The Big 12 suddenly carries a lot of weight in the follow-up round of Mingo's recruiting. And sure, BYU already has Rob Wright, Collin Chandler, and an even higher-rated '26 class man in Bruce Branch already on the roster, but what's the harm in adding another talented guard to soften the tunnel of thorns that is the Big 12 in-conference schedule?
Maybe I'm thinking too hard about this. Maybe BYU doesn't have any interest in adding Mingo, let alone the budget to afford another player of his caliber. At this point, what Kevin Young really needs is a starting center -- and I'm okay if he has a bit of tunnel vision in making that crucial addition.
If you ask me, I'd say Mingo is Waco-bound. Perhaps we'll see plenty of him during the season.
