Jake Retzlaff has withdrawn from the BYU football program. It's official: he's out the door.
In his wake remains a quarterback competition making camp in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains, with three prevailing candidates capable of taking over the play-calling responsibilities for a team aspiring to build upon a breakout 2025 campaign.
But from this point onward, Retzlaff's path splits from that of his former team, setting his sights on the prospects of a new home and one last ride through the college football world.
The quarterback whose proud religious roots bore incredible fruit in an unlikely place is currently making the effort to land at a new university. But per On3, his incoming move may be further down the road than originally expected. Said Pete Nackos, "With the season nearing, BYU QB Jake Retzlaff is searching for his landing spot. Sources have told [On3 Sports] that 'nothing is imminent.'"

So what comes next?

But with the transfer portal closed and his status as an eligible player suddenly up in the air, Jake's horizon is growing narrower by the day. So, does the news that he has no announcements in the immediate future bode well or poorly for his future as a collegiate football player?
Here's the reality of the situation. Retzlaff is eligible for one more season as a graduate student, and any program considering making his addition understands he's a rental. That said, this quarterback proved to be an exceptional culture fit with the Cougs -- a player who teammates want to rally around. It's no wonder that the team exceeded expectations last year; they were a team united.
Clutch moments, surgical precision (with a few decision-making errors), and just the right amount of "screw you, we're winning this thing" makes Retzlaff an attractive candidate as a plug-and-play signal caller.
But despite having his civil case dismissed, Retzlaff's reputation has been tarnished during this offseason. Not simply for the honor code violation, but simply being included in an accusatory sexual assault case may give some schools cause for hesitation. For good and for bad, Retzlaff's media tilt-a-whirl has left BYU football a bit stunned.
For any school considering offering Jake a shot, this should be the takeaway: Jake Retzlaff is a good quarterback whose improvement and leadership lifted BYU to a breakout season in the Big 12. No one can guarantee future success (especially on such short notice), but for a program that needs a veteran presence and an X-factor that simply cannot be learned, number 12 made a strong case at BYU.
