Jake Retzlaff will be a Heisman winner by season's end!
... Oops, this must have been from an earlier version of the article. Awkward. Hey, who knows, maybe Tulane goes 12-0 and that'll turn out true.
With the onset of the BYU football season now less than a month away, we here at Lawless Republic are here to plant our flags and intrepidly declare our wildest, most delusional, and downright unthinkable predictions for the upcoming season.
Everybody's got a bit of crazy left in their cranium, and it grows from a lingering whisper to an undeniable shout when football season appears over the horizon. We've been football deprived for far too long, and we simply can't hold our opinions back anymore.
We've seen the future. We've read the script. One of us consulted the oracle. Another is busy reading the tomes. Rumor has it that one of us has even made a vow of celibacy to clear his mental pathways before revealing the future of BYU football. Dedication unlike anywhere else. Some would call it insanity; we know it to be the path to wisdom.
Or not. We'll all find out by season's end, right?
With that preamble out of the way, here are the boldest and wildest predictions our writers have kept in the slow cooker. It's dinner time.
Bold and brash predictions for BYU football in 2025

The starting QB will outperform Retzlaff in every major category
The starting quarterback still remains to be named in the wake of Jake Retzlaff's departure, and all intel leads us to believe it's a three-man race between McCae Hillstead, Treyson Bourguet, and Bear Bachmeier. Here's the bold prediction, though: regardless of whoever assumes the mantle of QB1, said field general will have a stronger season than Jake Retzlaff's last year.
How do we quantify this? In TD's, INT's, yards, and completion percentage. Retzlaff posted 20 scores, 12 interceptions, 2,947 yards, and 57.9% completion. This year's head honcho will improve on each of these totals (while tossing fewer interceptions).
BYU's defense led the way last season; such will be the case this year. Strong quarterback play is essential to winning football games, however, and this year's leader will need to stand up to the challenge. I believe he does just that. --Calvin Barrett
BYU will beat Utah by two scores
Without Cam Rising, Utah will need to figure out how to play around a new quarterback. Plus, Provo is a hard place to win, especially when it is sold out, which I expect it to be. --Jake Olsen
LJ Martin rushes for 200 yards in a game
With the question mark at the quarterback position, Martin will be shouldering a large responsibility all season. He showed plenty of flashes last year, and running behind a great offensive line will help him find that big breakout game. --Spencer Haddock
BYU will rush for 2,000 yards as a team this season
Feel free to return and congratulate us when the season reaches its conclusion and we're batting 1.000.
